Hopke Awarded Landmark Project for New Inova Alexandria Hospital at Site of Old Landmark Mall
August 7, 2024 | W.B. Hopke Co. | New Project Award
Inova Health System’s Springfield and Alexandria Hospital plans to be under construction by third quarter of 2024. The one billion-dollar Alexandria facility will be on the site of the former Landmark Mall.
The Alexandria Hospital will replace the Seminary Road Hospital and is estimated to be a total of 930,000 square feet. It will include an acute care hospital campus of 675,000 square feet, a 130,000 square feet Inova Cancer Institute and a 110,000 square feet specialty outpatient care center.
The building will be positioned near Interstate 395 and will be the workplace to 50 specialized physicians. The location will include a 550-space parking garage and will be over 175 feet tall or 16 stories when complete. The hospital is due to be completed in 2028.
The Inova Alexandria Hospital project for wet utilities was awarded to W.B. Hopke in May 2024 and is set to begin in July 2024. Located at 5901 Duke Street in Alexandria, VA, the hospital wet utilities project includes water, sanitary and storm drainage. The general contractor for the project is Clark Construction.
The Hopke management team includes Charlie McClellan, Senior Estimator, Senior Project Manager Paul Cloutier, Superintendent Jimbo Cloniger and Foreman Carlos Hernandez and his crew.
Hopke’s project work will include laying 400 LF of 6″ water line and 200 LF of 12″ water line and installing 2 fire hydrants. The sanitary work includes laying 12″ pipe 30 feet deep, which is very deep due to the grade of the property, and a 10″ pipe approximately 15-20′ deep.
Charlie McClellan, Hopke senior estimator said, “The biggest challenge with this project is the depth of the trenches for the sanitary pipes. Digging trenches 30 feet deep requires skillful operators and numerous safety precautions.”
The storm drains will vary in sizes from 12″-36″ to and from the building and from the roof drains, and the project calls for 2 bioretention areas to help treat and manage on-site stormwater discharge.
W.B. Hopke will continue to provide updates and photos for this project in the coming weeks. Special thanks to our client and our team for making this award a reality.
