Hopke Nearing Completion at ATLA Columbia Crossroads Wet Utilities Project in Falls Church, VA

What began as a concept and catalyst project in Bailey’s Crossroad is becoming a reality. The ATLA Columbia  Crossroads project, a new five-story apartment building located at 5851 Columbia Pike in Falls Church, VA, will include 361 apartments and three townhomes. The Wood Partners project which began in March of 2023 and is scheduled for completion in 2025, will include twelve percent of the building for affordable dwelling units (ADU’s). The project includes an activated streetscape, public park spaces and housing.

W.B. Hopke, subcontractor to Anderson, began the wet utilities work on March 7, 2023, which includes water to the main building and sanitary and storm to the main building and townhomes. The project is now about 98% complete and should wrap up in August 2024.

The storm work included a Stormtech MC-7200 Detention System, 350’+ 42″ RCP, 500’+ 36″ RCP, 40’+ 18″ RCP, 200′ 15″ RCP, 4 bio retention boxes and 13 storm structures. The sanitary included 400′ of 8″ sanitary to the building, 7 sanitary structures, and several 4″ sanitary laterals to townhomes. The water included 90′ water/fire line to building and 2 fire hydrants.

“What was unique for this particular project is that it required the install of a lot of large bore storm pipe,” said senior project manager, Paul Cloutier. “The project, though mostly routine, was challenging at times as sanitary sewer work on Columbia Pike had several conflicts with existing underground utilities,” Paul explained.
