Hopke Continues with Storm, Sanitary and Water Project at 11th and Vermont Apartments in Arlington, VA
August 13, 2024 | W.B. Hopke Co. | Job Highlights
The 55,667 SF construction and redevelopment project at 1031 N. Vermont Street Arlington, VA, was the original site of a two-story church and an adjacent parking lot in the heart of Ballston. The site is now being transformed into a beautiful mixed-use residential community of townhomes and multi-family units in the heart of Ballston.
The South Block will include 14 (four-story) townhomes and a 58 unit, seven story multi-family building, including 110 parking spaces in a two level below grade garage. The North Block of the property will include 12 townhomes (four stories) and 18 parking spaces.
W.B. Hopke was awarded the wet utilities project that originally began in April 2023. It includes sanitary, storm and water. The general contractor for this project is Donohoe Construction Companies.
Hopke’s storm work included a relocated and newly installed storm main on Utah Street, a cast in place vault and a small Jellyfish filter system that included five filters in the garage area of the site. Hopke also tied into existing internal plumbing and manhole in the street and installed an 8″ pipe that ran about 100′. For the water, Hopke installed a fire service line and fire hydrant, a domestic line and the huge precast water meter vault which was installed by a crane.
Said project manager Mike Fiebert, “What was significant about this project is that there had to be absolute coordination between Hopke and other community services. There was a localized shut down of utilities, specifically water, which impacted the nearby hospital. Whenever you have this type of shutdown, you must be cautious with the amount of pressure in the lines as that can cause issues to whoever is tied into them. There was also a night-time shut down and road closure on Vermont to minimize the impact on traffic in the area as the water meter vault was being installed.”
The project at 11th and Vermont is coming to a close, and Hopke should wrap up the project in late July/August of 2024.
WB Hopke would like to thank all those that helped make this project a success to include Estimator – Charlie McClellan, Project Manager – Mike Fiebert, Superintendent – Billy Green, Foremen – Jeremiah Thompson, Willie Hernandez and Josue Lozano and their crews.
