Hopke Continues Wet Utilities for Inova Springfield Hospital in Alexandria, Virginia
January 21, 2025 | W.B. Hopke Co. | Job Highlights
In late September 2024, the Inova Health System broke ground on two new hospitals in Alexandria and Springfield, respectively. Each hospital is considered an acute care hospital and will replace Inova Alexandria Hospital to become Inova Franconia-Springfield, joining Inova HealthPlex as the systems first hospital in Springfield, Virginia. Inova Franconia-Springfield will be state-of-the-art offering patients in Northern Virginia and the region world-class medical treatment.
Overseen by general contractor DPR Construction, Hopke began the wet utilities work on August 22, 2024 which consists of sanitary, storm, water and drainage. The project is about 50% complete with a tentative date of completion by late 2026. The site project is located at 7000 Beulah St., Alexandria, VA, and there are two main phases of work which include 1. the enabling phase, which is the area around the existing Metroplex building and 2. the new facility parking garage, 2 tower hospital, and CUP building.
Paul Cloutier, Hopke Senior Project Manager stated, “The sanitary work consists of demoing the existing sanitary lines and installing a new sanitary main at about 20′ depth. The installation will require 2560′ of 6″ – 10″ sanitary main/laterals and 23 sanitary structures. Storm includes demolition of the existing storm lines and the installation of new storm lines to include 3,310′ of 6″ thru 27″ RCP/ PVC, 36 manhole/inlets, Cast in place vault, and 3 Jellyfish.”
Existing water lines need to be demolished and Hopke will install 2,550′ of 6″ – 12″ watermain, 400 feet of 10″ fire line, 4 fire hydrants, 2 wet taps, 19 gate valves, and 40 fittings. Finally for drainage, there will be a bio retention area created and installation of bio retention strips.
Hopke is used to taking on and completing many large, wet utility projects throughout Northern Virginia, DC and Maryland. And this project does have its challenges. Cloutier stated, “The Enabling phase has 3 phases that will allow continued work around the existing building and will keep pedestrian and emergency vehicles access open during the construction process. The new phase has multiple below grade levels requiring site utilities to be installed within a certain schedule and to interact without conflicting with the other trades.”
Hopke is fortunate to have the workforce to complete projects of this size. We would like to extend a big thank you to all those that have made this project successful to date, including Senior Project Manager – Paul Cloutier, Estimator – Dillion McCoy, Superintendent – Jimbo Cloniger and our three formen and crews including Foreman – Jeremiah Thompson and his crew Denis Argueta, Darwin Vasquez, Audilio Vasquez, Jose Escobar and Robert Frye.
