W.B. Hopke Recognizes Billy Green, Superintendent for His 20 Years of Exemplary Employment

Billy Green, superintendent, has worked for W.B. Hopke for more than 20 years. As a loyal and dedicated part of our management team, we felt that it was overdue to pay him tribute and tell his story.

Prior to joining W.B. Hopke in 2003, Billy enrolled and served his time in the United States Marine Corp. In 2003, he found out that he and his wife were going to have a baby, so he was faced with a choice, re-up for another term of service in the corp, or find gainful employment in civilian world which would keep him home and closer to his family and new baby. Fortunately for Hopke, he chose the later.

“A friend of my father had heard that Hopke was hiring and suggested that I turn in an application for employment. So, I applied. I did not start my career with Hopke as a superintendent. Like many superintendents before me, I had to earn my way into my current position,” said Billy.

Billy began his career as a loader operator in 2003. Then in 2004 he was asked to run an excavator. In 2006, he was promoted to foreman and in 2017, he was made superintendent, a position he still holds to this day.

As a Hopke superintendent, Billy has numerous responsibilities. He manages several projects simultaneously. He is currently working on the 2025 Clarendon Blvd in Arlington, Iron Mountain VA4 & VA5 in Manassas, Broad and Washington in Falls Church and he just started Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Alexandria . He also oversees several crews for those projects. He maps out the crews’ daily workload, assists with the supplies needed to keep the jobs moving and most important he ensures that his crews are operating within the safety regulations so that no one gets hurt.

“Working with the guys, the camaraderie and challenging projects has kept me with Hopke all these years,” Billy said. “And the most important thing is that the owners take care of their own. They treat us with respect and provide opportunities for growth within the company.”

Billy has completed numerous projects and learned many roles throughout the years. Some projects stick out more than others. He particularly liked working on the Dulles Airport project as that project was different than most. He had to approach the project differently because he was working around large aircraft, equipment trucks and runways.

“I have learned so much since working for Hopke. Chuck Johnson and Frank Hopke took me under their wing, so-to-speak. From running various pieces of equipment to reading drawing and plans, I am continuously learning every day,” said Billy.

There have been a lot of changes in the construction industry since Billy started with Hopke. The most notable change is the heavy reliance on technology. “Between computers, job tracking software, remote and programmable equipment, and even our cell phones have changed the way we work. We are so much more responsive and can react faster,” Billy said. He also mentioned that his hair color is another thing that has changed since he started working for Hopke.

When asked what advice he could share with the younger guys, the up and comers within Hopke, Billy reflected on his own secret for success and said the following. “I succeeded here because I came to work on time every day, rain or shine. Whatever needed to be done, I put myself out there and got it done. I was always someone my employer could count on to see a job through. Those are the employees that get noticed and that move up and make a difference at Hopke,” he said.

Billy Green has a very active family life. He is a devoted family man to his wife, Lina “Alise” Green. He has one son, Will Green Junior who is 19, and two daughters, Avery 8 and Rylie 6. Billy is an avid deer and turkey hunter and he used to ride motor cross competitively. Today, he helps the Mid Atlantic Motorcross Association as a referee.

Special thanks to Billy Green for all his hard work and dedication to W.B. Hopke Company. Your efforts, attitude and energy are genuinely appreciated.
